Essay: A Career As An Anesthesiologist

Many people think that they know exactly what they want to do with their future by their freshman year of high school, myself included. I was dead set on wanting to become a nurse. Although I hadn’t done much research on what exactly I wanted to do in the medical field, I knew I wanted to help people. I thought that being a Psychologist, or an Anesthesiologist were the best choices for me.
Going into my freshman year of high school I was enrolling in different elective classes and one of them was Health Science, taught by Mr. Munk. Knowing that I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field I jumped at the chance to be in this class. It was a very simple, educative class that I learned a lot from. Munk also had a class called Sports Medicine, and although I did want this future in medicine, I was so against taking this class. I loved Health Science and all that I learned from it but I did not think that I wanted to pursue a career in sports medicine. To me, it sounded boring and like it was a waste of time. I wanted to actually help people and because I was uneducated on the subject matter I thought that Sports Medicine, or becoming an athletic trainer, was not actually considered to be a career in the medical field.
Sophomore year I sat back and watched as all my close friends and peers who had also wanted to be in the medical field one day took Sports Medicine 1. Of course, they all loved it so, Junior year I took Sports Medicine 1. It was nothing like I expected it would be. Being an athletic trainer gave you so many more responsibilities than I had thought. You weren’t just putting Band-Aids on small cuts, but you were actually helping someone who had been injured. I loved Sports Medicine 1 and I think that class is what sparked the fire. It changed my outlook on my future
