Part 1A - What are the main features of childhood studies?
With childhood studies there are many features, however according to the audio ‘What is Childhood Studies’ the Open University (2014) speak of distinctive features being interdisciplinary. This means that when children are being studied it does not just involve different disciplines, but also children from all around the world. This allows for cultural and economic, social and political factors to be taken into account.

Children are all different in their own ways and this depends on their gender, when and where they live and their parents upbringing. Childhood does not mean the same thing to everybody. In some countries they expect children to be out at work by the time they are 8 years old. This is the case in poorer countries where education is not free, therefore families cannot afford to send their children to school as putting food on their plates is more important.
All children have a right to be protected, provided for as well as allowed to participate, so with this in mind in 1989 an international agreement was signed called, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This policy promotes children’s rights and is divided into welfare and autonomy rights and is made up of 54 articles in all. The convention also states to the governments (of those countries that approve) what they must do so that a child has the better possible opportunity to live as healthy as they can, learn as much as they can and to be protected whilst treated fairly.
