Until the beginning of the current semester as a student in group counseling courses, I had very little knowledge of group counseling. I had the impression group counseling was specially intended for alcoholics anonymous or narcotics anonymous. Through the article provided to me I was not only able to see group counseling in a different setting, but I was able to relate to how successful group therapy can be.
While reading Adlerian-Based Positive Group Counseling Intervention with Emotionally Troubled Youth (2016), I was able to use evidence based studies to see group therapy in a specific population. I found the article by J. Steve Hamm, John Carlson, and Bengu Erguner-Tekinalp, very interesting since troubled youth and young adults have always been a population I advocate for. As I currently work with the troubled youth and young adult population I could see how there would be success with many forms of strengths based therapies. I have personally found that it is a frequent truth of many in this age group thriving in group settings, when in the proper environment.

I found many interesting and impactful intervention examinations and one being “the focus is more on what goes well rather than what goes wrong” (Carlson, Watts, & Maniacci, 2006). This is what should be considered a staple of strengths based perspectives. I believe this is what I took most from the article. Traditionally, one is to treat a problem in therapy, with the positive psychology movement, the focus has greatly shifted. Group counseling today is looking ahead to encouraging and empowering
