In the late 1950’s my grandparents had to leave their homes, jobs, and family in Havana to escape a ruthless Fidel Castro regime. My grandparents were not allowed to go back to their homes until very recently when portions of the travel ban were lifted, but we can go further than that. We need to lift the embargo on Cuba because it makes sense from a political and an economic perspective.
Let's take a look at how we need to pass this bill from a political perspective. As most of you probably know the horrible, former Dictator of Cuba, Fidel Castro has recently died. The people of Cuba are very poor. The National Office of Statistics in Cuba, reports that the average Cuban only make about 25 U.S. dollars per month. Cubans are poor, and cutting of their country from free trade does not help this. If we allowed trade and travel it would help the people who suffer most from the embargo, the Cubans. Lifting the embargo will boost the Cuban economy. It will also boost the American economy. The US Chamber of Commerce found that if the trade ban was lifted, the United States could make $1.2 billion annually on exports to Cuba. A Texas A&M study found that easing restrictions on agricultural exports to Cuca could 6,000 new agricultural jobs in the United States. Lifting the trade and travels bans will create U.S. jobs and increase sales with Cuba. Also ending the Embargo would allow U.S. businesses to open up in Cuba which the E.U., Brazil, Canada, and many other countries have already started to do. This will help both U.S. businesses and Cubans. If American restaurants, and stores open in Cuba, then this will create more jobs for the Cuban people and help American businesses.
