There are many high school students that attend high school but don’t continue to attend college because no one in their family before them did. These high school students would be called first generation college students. First generation college students are ones that attend high school but then continue on to college and be the first one to do so. In this lit review I will be explaining all about the first generation college students. First generation students get that name when attending college when their parents didn’t attend college. Being a first generation college student can be many things, scary intimidating and rewarding, you are doing something that your parents didn’t have the opportunity to do or just didn’t want to do. Being the first generation student can be also very exciting. According to (Banks-Santilli, 2013) “First generation college students face many unique psychological challenges, ones that kids who have parents that when to college and got a four year degree don’t face.” Instead of them viewing this as their children continuing their education some family’s view their kids going to college as them breaking the family’s system. Also, some first year students my also develop two different identities, one identity for the home and one identity for while at school (Banks-Santilli, 2013). Out of 7.3 million undergraduates attending a four year college only about 20% of them are first generation college students (Banks-Santilli, 2013).
