Every child should be able to participate in recess, which should be part of the school schedule. However, some school districts have eliminated recess because they would instead replace recess time with something that could benefit the students academically. Kids should be able to choose what they want to do in their schedule, which should not be restricted by the school. Moreover, schools should include recess because it enhances children’s learning ability, and gives them time to relax and unwind. Also, having recess time can be beneficial to the cognitive development of the brain. Based on research and studies on this topic, data has shown that recess provides students with the environment they need to help them grow into well-rounded individuals. …show more content…
Kids may feel stressed about certain things happening in school and should have time to cope with these problems. A quote from Achieve 3000 shows why recess time is crucial to the well-being of students. The article The Upside to Being Outside, states that “Some scientists think a good dose of nature acts as an antidote to information overload.” The statement suggests that when there is a lack of outdoor time, kids’ brains may be unable to process information quickly, which leads to the majority of the time wasted because kids will not be able to retain the concepts taught. On top of that, Rebecca Mayes remarks that children and adults learn better and faster when their efforts are distributed, rather than all at once, especially when relaxed (4). This thought conveys that when people take breaks, they have a chance to relax, which increases their capacity to learn better. In other words, the time given to these children will be used as a break to give them time to understand the knowledge they have obtained, increasing their likelihood of holding onto the information. Thus, recess has a direct effect on the mood of a person, and will help them through their daily …show more content…
While this may be true, the benefits far outweigh the negatives. Recess can help kids have a clear mind, which is an important reason to connect back to the valuable information learned in the classroom. This will benefit them since they can use this fresh start to face the challenges of completing schoolwork. A statistic from an IMEPA 2018 survey notes that “81 percent of teachers said that kids’ behaviors changed positively as a result of having recess; 78 percent noted their students were focused and ready for their next lesson.” (Silliman, 2) This change in mood clearly shows how these benefits outweigh any negatives. including recess time in the student’s daily routine can help them balance their school work and physical activities and maintain a healthy
