The argument of whether public schools should start an hour later or not is one that has been around for quite a while. On one side of the argument are those who think that starting school an hour later is beneficial to students and their overall academic success. On the other side are those who think that starting school an hour later is not beneficial and would only lead to more scheduling issues and other conflicts. One of the primary pros for starting school an hour later is that it would allow students to get more sleep. Adolescents need between 8-10 hours of sleep per night (“Schools Start Too Early | Sleep and Sleep Disorders”), but due to the early start times of most public schools, they are often not able to get the recommended amount of sleep. This can lead to a number of issues such as increased fatigue, difficulty concentrating and a decrease in academic performance. By starting school an hour later, students would be better able to get the recommended amount of sleep and be more alert and focused during the school day.
