The United States is known as one of the fattest nations in the world. Obesity has been increasing dramatically over the last couple of years. The majority of the people have been pointing fingers at fast food franchises such as McDonald’s. Big corporations do not consider the health of the people consuming their products; but is fast food the main factor for the substantial growth in obesity? It might seem that way but obesity also has to do with self control. Americans do not like taking responsibility for their actions, especially for a nation wide problem such as obesity. Due to this ratio, people are more likely to eat at a fast food restaurant rather than going shopping at a grocery store for healthier foods. It is said that fast food restaurants serve more than fifty million people each day. The age groups that are being targeted are the eighteen to twenty five year olds, these individuals are more likely to eat foods that are not healthy. Fast food companies lead people to obesity with their strategic marketing. Many companies change the portion size in order to get the consumers to buy more. The portion sizes are constantly changing over time, getting bigger and bigger as the years go by. McDonald’s for example, first started out with only having one size which is now the smallest size served now. Shannon Brownlee, in It’s Portion Distortion That Makes America Fat, puts the blame on the marketing by stating. “This is not to say that the folks in the fast food industry want us to be fat. But make no mistake: when they do well economically, we gain weight”(4). Big name franchises change the portion sizes in order to get people to buy more, it is more of a competition between fast food restaurants to see who makes more profit.
