Obesity in America

Obesity has become a great health challenge not only in America but the world in general. The disease has been found to affect more than 50 million people in America particularly due to poor eating habits fueled by intense marketing of unhealthy foods and lack of exercise. Obesity lowers the quality of one’s life thereby leading to social isolation, risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and psychological problems.
The effects of obesity to both children and adults include elevated risk of chronic diseases, such as type II diabetes, cancer, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and heart diseases. Moreover, obesity reduces the life expectancy of a person whereby people with rising Basal Metabolic Index incur a lower life expectancy in addition to increasing health complications. However, genes need to combine with behavioral factors to create full-blown obesity. This may be the case with multiple genes combining with little physical exercise or large quantities of food intake. Further, the chances of a person becoming obese increase if they have a relative who is obese.
Therefore, having a better understanding of the role genes play towards the onset of obesity and environmental interactions is crucial for comprehending the causal pathways leading to the disease as well as the preventive measures. Since genetic obesity may either be linked to family or ethnicity, it is important for one to change their lifestyle, diet, and environmental factors since it is hard to change one’s genes.
