Screen Media and Infants/Toddlers
This journal article talks about how screen media use can affect children and their development. There are different types of screen media and as time goes kids are being introduced to screen media at younger ages. Parents are letting babies and younger children play with their phones, watch television, and play with other electronic devises. Furthermore kids now days know how to work a phone and other devises by the age of three or four.
Intended Audience
The intended audience for this article would be researchers. It talks about a few studies that have been done about how different types of screen media affects development in young children; the main one is watching television. Environment consists of your surroundings and interactions with those around you. The article talks about how important it is to have parent- child interactions. Focuses on what is going on in the environment the kids are in. Experiences run the gamut from the individual’s biological environment to the social environment. (Santrock, 2016).
Cognitive/Socioemotional
Brain development or cognitive development can be affected by usage of screen media. There is no known advantage to brain development for children under the age of two years from watching television. (Napier, 2014).
Scientific Findings/Expert Opinion
I feel that it is a combination of scientific findings as well as expert opinion. There are many theories on the issue of screen media and how it affects development in young children. The article mentions different reports, studies and systematic reviews that have been conducted on screen media and young children. Even though they all have different views the one thing they all have in common is that they recognize the need for further research.
