Introduction ‘An estimated 88.7 million people cast ballots in the 2010 midterm election. Expressed as a percentage of those eligible to vote, the turnout rate was 40.7%’ (McDonald, M. P. 2010. p.1). This essay looks at the important aspect of the United States election, which is solely based on voter turnout. With main relevance to the Midterm election which has a lower voter turnout rate. In most countries turnout rate is used to determine the political participation and democracy. Voter turnout is the total percentage of voters who cast a ballot during election. There are certain factors such as age which could deter an individual from being eligible to cast a ballot. However, this essay critically answers the question why voter turnout is considered problematic in America. This will be analyzed by introducing scholarly articles and recent debates on American voter turnout. The main cause of low turnout is basically the registration process with strict regulations. However, other factors which include income and education are discussed in the essay. Democracy also poses a real threat to American politics, as the views of minority groups are not well represented.
