Let’s just say one wakes up six am every morning to practice day in and day out for the big championship game. That same individual goes to class, straight A student, all star athlete at ABC college. Yet there is still no income and he/she still goes to bed hungry at night. Would you believe me if I said this were a true story? Well actually it is. I know it sounds crazy, right? Should college athletes be compensated for their dedication and hard work to the college of their choice? Granted they may be recruited to these schools but why should they have to go hungry and suffer through semesters with no income. Over the full four-year stint in college, scholarships can pay well over the amount of tuition cost. A certain amount of athletes receive full scholarships that can usually result in a free college degree. The scholarship amount varies based upon the university attended. However, a significant amount of student athletes may not receive a full or partial scholarship before attending school. Athletes do not need to be compensated for playing a sport that they love and enjoy. Athletes are generally chosen by schools to represent on the highest collegiate level. Smaller schools in most cases cannot offer the same incentives as Division 1 schools therefore giving the athlete the drive to make it to Division 1 schools. Often they leave college after the first year to pursue a career in the professional leagues which affords them the salaries needed to have a comfortable life. Being paid on a collegiate does not give a player the incentive to be better. It only gives the player the incentive for overzealous life style and possibly only wanting to do just enough to scathe by.
