College, it’s what is on every young high schoolers mind constantly. Many focus on having to get accepted into the college or university of their dream, but there’s one thing that some students tend to overlook at first, tuition. The tuition to get into a college can dictate whether or not aspiring young adults are able to attend college without having to worry about the massive amount of debt that can pile up with taking out student loans. In the past thirty years, even adjusting for inflation, college tuition fees have risen by 400% and the amount of student loan debt has surpassed a trillion dollars, but can this much debt be avoided in the long run? Many other countries such as Germany, Mexico, Denmark, Sweden, and Brazil, have implemented ‘free’ college into their societies. If the United States were to implement a free college program, we would most certainly have to raise some part of our taxes, but could it be more beneficial to all of us to have government paid higher education? If we closed corporate tax loopholes, we could easily gain back what we’ve lost to student debt. A system of free higher public education would eliminate the substantial amount of student indebtedness. Billions in new funds from the debt lessening would return to general circulation each year, making our economy better in theory. Graduates would end up earning higher incomes because they would now be unencumbered by debt. Of course the effectiveness would have to be brought into question because it is such a large scale problem, but it is obvious that it could change parts of our economy
