Why Marijuana Should Be Legal In All 50 States

Marijuana has been quite the topic since more states have decided to legalize it, some for recreational use and other simply for medicinal benefits. While some states are taking the step to move forward and legalize the plant, others have been hesitant and it’s time we use the knowledge we have about marijuana to change their minds and make it legal across the United States. Marijuana has a long history of medicinal use and is used mainly for pain management while it is being tested to slow down and prevent an abundance of serious diseases. It is also being used daily to help with popular diseases such as anxiety. When state revenue goes down everyone who works is hurt by the price jumps and possible tax raises. But, when the revenue goes up schools can afford more books, construction can get done faster, more bus routes can be opened, and the people who keep us safe are able to get a pay they deserve. Legalizing marijuana is very beneficial for Colorado’s state revenue has gone up yearly since the legalization of marijuana. Between 2013 and 2014 “Colorado’s state tax revenue from marijuana sales reached $70 million—nearly double that of alcohol.” (Skiing, 28) Colorado is not the only state who is benefiting from the legalization of marijuana, the Washington Times reported that in June alone, Roughly $86.7 million in pot sales were reported, yielding over $20 million in taxes for the state. The sales have not declined and the state does not believe that the pot business will lose it’s status as a multi-billion dollar industry anytime soon, if ever.
