Unit 5 Guiding Questions and Terms

Economic development came after territorial expansion, and it made regional tensions between the North and South worse. In the North economic development pushed towards industrialization, the creation of a market system, and a transport revolution. These economic developments flourished due to the high amount of immigrants moving into the area. The South however, was very different as it continued its growth of slavery and the cotton economy. The white landowners of the South pushed for less laws surrounding slavery and the African American slaves were forced to deal with hardships pertaining to their family, religion and the suffering from slavery .

This belief was significant as it fueled Americans to expand throughout the continent and create new states and territories.

Oregon Fever: People who were unsatisfied with their lives were given the opportunity to travel the Oregon trail and settle in a new state on the west coast. The strong inclination to travel to this new state known as Oregon to have a better life was known as Oregon Fever. Oregon Fever was significant as it created a new state and led to an even greater popularity in moving westward.

Wilmot Proviso: The Wilmot Proviso was a proposal to ban slavery in the newly acquired territory after the Mexican-American War. This proposal was unsuccessful yet it was important as it would go on to show the support of Anti-slavery from the North. It also showed another solution to slavery than the Abolitionist way.

Free-Soil movement: A political movement which promoted the goal of not allowing slavery to spread westward. It was a short lived movement, however its ideas would go on to influence ideas surrounding slavery for years to …show more content…

This would go on to flood the states with settlers who wanted to sway the vote in their favor towards slavery or anti-slavery. Eventually this would lead to bleeding Kansas. This act was important due to the fact it added new territories and it led to bleeding Kansas, an event which would be an important cause of the Civil War.

American, or Know-Nothing, Party : A nativist political party in the United States which pushed strong anti-catholic and anti-immigrant ideas. This party showed the ideas of the time against immigrants and catholics, as well as foreign influence as a whole, this was important and showed the strong feeling of individuality in the Nation.

“Bleeding Kansas”: A conflict in Kansas where pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces fought over territory. A pro-slavery mob burned down multiple buildings inside of an abolitionists settlement to stop their beliefs. The conflict was also in the senate, as a pro-slavery senator assaulted an anti-slavery senator who was speaking of the burning of the abolitionist settlement.
