Aiden Benning Ubowski English 9 Pd.3 6/3/24 Who Is At Fault For The Death of Romeo and Juliet Romeo and Juliet is a story of love and hatred between two lovers from opposing houses who are born from hatred for one another, the lovers must hide their love, which results in their untimely death. But who to blame for their death is debated, however, the blame can be put on a multitude of factors, including societal pressures, the mood of the two lovers, and the two’s family. The factors that caused Romeo and Juliet’s death each played their part, but the mood of the two lovers played the largest role in their deaths. This is due to their almost constant threats to kill themselves when small bumps in their path occur, minuscule setbacks in their relationship have them act like the world is ending. The text supports this as there are a multitude of times where Romeo and Juliet threaten to kill themselves, one example being “Give me some present counsel; or, behold, ‘Twixt my extremities and me this bloody knife shall play the umpire.” (4.1.68-70) This part of the text is where Juliet once again threatens Friar that she will kill herself due to Paris marrying her. This puts pressure on the lovers as it forces them to hide their marriage, their love, and anything they plan on doing together. If these two were from families who didn’t hate each other, then it would’ve been much more likely that these two would’ve survived and lived a happier life. The clashing of the family also caused the exile of Romeo, another part that contributed to the couple’s death. If Romeo was never exiled, he would’ve known Juliet was dead, and would never have bought poison and killed
