Yesterday, Sloan Jackson, age 18 was put on trial for stealing a shirt from Famous Fashions in Merchandise Mall. He supposedly ran out of the store with a lump (which was the same color as the stolen shirt) in his jacket to go to Record Mart because there was a big sale going on. He then was found sitting next to the yogurt stand and the shirt was found in a trash barrel near the yogurt stand. He then ran away from the security guard but he was in the end caught and brought back to the store to return the shirt. At the trial yesterday the jury came to a verdict of being guilty after talking in the jury room for about 10 minutes.

Aunt Henrietta Jackson daughter of Fielding W Jackson and Elvira Ellis was born in January of 1878. Although some people might argue that Shirley Chisholm does not demonstrate leadership qualities, a closer examination proves that the former congresswoman was a strong leader because of her independence, perseverance,and willingness to take risks. Shirley Chisholm is a great leader because she blazed a trail by being the first African American Congresswoman. For example, “Chisholm indulged her maverick nature in a spectacular gesture. She became the first black woman to run for president” (Morin pg1).This proves that she was the first black individual in her field to run for president so this makes her a trailblazer because all leaders should possess this for the reason that no leader can lead from behind.

When Ruth McBride was a teenager in Suffolk, VA, all she wanted was to be like the other teenagers in her school, white Anglo Saxon protestant Americans (McBride, 2006, p 109). In other words, she would have liked to conform to norms of the society that she spent most of her time with. However, because she was a Jew in the rural south in the 1930’s and 40’s, and because she was the child of an abusive and overbearing Orthodox Jewish father, she never had a chance to try (McBride, 2006). It is my hope to become a great engineer one day. Because of my career choice to become an Engineer, I felt Shirley Jackson has been, and is continuing to be a huge inspiration to me. We often dwell on past famous people who are long gone, but I chose Shirley Ann Jackson to share as the African American female that has, and continues to inspire me. I am inspired by an African-American female by the name of Shirley Jackson.
