Life is full of choices one must make every day. Some of these choices may cause an ethical dilemma that may interfere with ones beliefs and possibly carry consequences. It is up to everyone to make choices in their life that lead to happiness and are in line with their beliefs and values. This paper will discuss the ethical dilemma of pornography, Christianity’s core beliefs about it, a resolution and evaluation, as well as a comparison to the Buddhist worldview. Ethical Dilemma A young man named TJ secretly enjoys pornography. He views porn in private and masturbates but does not believe it is wrong. He thinks this okay because he is not “harming” anyone. In addition to the harm caused to the victims of sexual exploitation, pornography and obscene material may harm the very fabric that forms our society. According to Showers (2002), obscenity damages marriages and places families in crisis; and communities face devastating public health and safety concerns due to pornography outlets. TJ is also unsure if viewing pornography makes him partially responsible for the harm being caused to the woman being exploited. Since he is not harming anyone, is it ethically wrong for TJ to continue masturbating to pornography in private? There are different perspectives and stances on the harm and or negative effects pornography has on society in terms of its impact on sexual violence. According to an opposing viewpoints article (Pornography, 2014), Andrea Dworkin and Catherine MacKinnon claim that pornography is harmful to women because it teaches men to view women as sex objects, making them more likely to commit acts of sexual violence. This is one point of view which claims that pornography has a negative impact on society.
