Living and working in a small community creates additional challenges with being a human service worker. The majority of people have deep generational roots in the community and everyone knows everyone else, including knowledge of personal matters. Having several community involvement activities such as attending the largest church and being on the school’s PTO creates even more challenges. The main concern is that it can be hard to separate knowledge that is learned about a person just from being a community member and knowledge that is learned through professional human service work.

Many ethical theories were discussed in the passages ‘The Human Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl’s and “The World of Epictetus: Courage and Endurance” by Vice Admiral James Stockdale. Some of the theories that were discussed have their similarities yet they hold many differences as well. One of Stockdale theories is that happiness demands that we set apart between what is, and is not within our control. Although we should try and influence our fate, we have to accept that we cannot control it. Both authors state something along the lines that, as human beings, we can either accept what we can’t change or live a life full of sorrow.

In order to successfully execute an ethical change initiative within an organization, the important role ethical drivers play needs to be examined. Johnson outlines four ethical drivers which should be included in a program to implement and sustain ethical standards. The four drivers are comprised of the following: ethical diagnosis, engaged leadership, targeted socialization processes, and ethical training. While all of these are important, the power engaged leadership can have over a group’s ethical behavior is instrumental to successful cultural change (Johnson, 2016). Engaged leadership could potentially drive effective implementation of the other three ethical drivers.
On a daily bases we, as human beings, are faced with making decisions that deal with right and wrong. We are taught at a young age about morals, ethics, values and our laws in society. Practice Area and Ethical Dilemma I chose youth addictions and mental health as my practice area because it’s an area that in my mind has got quite a few grey areas in regards to the rights of minors which has always really interested me. For example, the privacy and consent rights of minors legally belong to their parents or guardians (Hansen, 2009). Therefore, as a counsellor working with minors, you have to consider the fact that both the minor and the parents or guardians have rights in this situation. Without taking into consideration the parent or guardian rights to know the content of the counselling session, the minor could be easily pulled from counselling.
