Ethical issues are currently affecting the organization Some corrections officers are having a difficult time with power and are uncertain how to deal with it. Some officers abuse the power in their positions. This usually causes the use of force or corruption with inmates. They may abuse their authority by embarrassing or degrading those in their authority. Officers’ ethics are at risk when they have a relationship that becomes personal. The inmate will do favors for the officer and may ask for something in return. The officer might smuggle drugs or phones in for the inmates as a return favor. An officer by the name of Terrance Johnson was arranging private meetings with inmate and his visitor to allow them to have sexual arrangements. Officer Johnson would receive 5,000 dollars for each of the arrangements. Another issue in the Arizona Department of Corrections is sexual assault. Some officers are sexual assaulting female inmates. This former employee of Arizona department of Corrections was having a relationship with a female inmate. Records state that the employee had five sexual encounters with female inmates and also gave the inmate jewelry and a deposit of 800 dollars into her account. The third issue in Arizona Corrections is drug smuggling. One correction officer was arrested for smuggling in 21 pounds of marijuana. Correction departments have the right to know about their employees who are working for them. Leaders in the corrections departments are the ones who are advanced in ethical decision making and also has an influence on supporting ethical actions among their squads or units. These leaders should maintain an environment of a higher standard in respect, ethics and morality among all correction officers.
