Ethical Issues In Frankenstein

1253 Words6 Pages

Cloning raises similar ethical questions as posed in Mary Shelly’s fiction novel called The Modern Prometheus. In that novel, a science student named Victor Frankenstein created life by unnatural means using unorthodox methods. He advanced his science and reanimated sewn together cadaver parts to create a monster using electricity (Shelly,1818). Cloning is not very different as it is an unnatural way to create life. It is done by taking the nucleus of a cell from a donor and combining it with an enucleated oocyte from a female of the same genus. The success of cloning animals and pets showed the possibilities of advancing the science but also created a lot of ethical issues to be debated. As with many things in science, a lot of good or bad …show more content…

In 1996, scientists created, on their 277th attempt, a sheep clone called Dolly. This clone had many medical problems and lived for only half of its expected twelve-year life span. She had advanced aging, progressive lung disease, and severe arthritis. Other animals were cloned but all had a low success rate, high instances of health issues, advanced aging, and low survival rate (“Cloning Dolly the sheep”,2016). In 2003, scientists discovered that chromatin transfer provided a higher success rate in cloning with fewer age and health complications. A company named Genetic Savings & Clone created a cloned tabby kitten named Little Nicky. This cat showed no ill effects of cloning that past animals had problems with (USAToday,2006). The cost for cloning a pet was $50,000 and the company had 50 cats planed for cloning. The high cost for clones ultimately shut down the business in 2006. Humans are harder to clone than animals and thus no humans have been successfully cloned. Attempts continue to be made but fail such as Dr. Panos Zavos attempt to clone a human in 2004. In 2013, scientist was able to clone embryonic stems cells of humans. This shows that one day, it may be possible to clone …show more content…

Imagine if we were able to clone some of the greatest minds of science such as Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, and Dr. Robin Mockett. If that were possible, then exponential advances would be made in physics, science, and medicine. Clones could be created to do jobs that nobody else wants to do such some farming or vineyard types of work. We could then clone Donald Trump and have him work in the vineyards of Napa Valley. This would eliminate the need for migrant illegals to work the fields while adhering to the slogan of “Let’s Make American Grapes
