Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are organizations that have been established by ordinary people and are not part of the government but may be funded by the state as well as foundations, businesses and/or private donors. NGOs have closer ties to on-the-ground realities in developing countries and are able to deliver development aid at a lower cost than the State or intergovernmental organizations. Nongovernmental organizations are doing important work to help raise important issues and tackle various problems that are often ignored. Fundacion Cerro Navia Joven initially began as a community center, but expanded throughout its twenty years since its foundation. Throughout the years they have implemented more programs and services to respond to the needs of the community. This NGO specializes on four sectors based on the following: education, youth, the elderly and people who are Intellectually disabled. One program that is particularly interesting is the Jardin Infantil “Los Lagos” program which combines the organization of a daycare and the educational model of preschools. This program cares for over 140 children ranging from 84 days to 5 years of age. The Jardin Infantil program seeks to promote the education and the integral well-being of the children who are of preschool age while facilitating a safe, comfortable and stimulating space for the children’s …show more content…

This is especially important because it directly helps those within the community in which the NGO is based. The mission of Fundacion Cerro Navia Joven states that they seek to contribute to ending inequality and social exclusion in Cerro Navia by responding to the needs and urgencies of the community with strategies directed at children, teens, adults, seniors and people who are intellectually disabled. This community is combating poverty in the way that people support and empower each other through these programs. For example the individuals who are intellectually disabled are given opportunities to understand the world of work by given job readiness opportunities, providing them with work skills and knowledge to understand how to be a contributing member of society. Other important programs include the daycare and education component for the children. This is especially helpful because the parents who are struggling to work and find adequate care and education for their children might not be able to financially do so without the support of Cerro Navia. The community is seeking action to empower themselves in order to build a strong collective to care for the needs of their
