Various departments originate their procedure concerning gratuities from the IACP model; it is an abuse of many governmental procedures to accept any gratuity. The slippery slope is individually insignificant to the increasing consequences of the steps that pulls and drives officers to further deliberate forms of unethical behaviors. After an officer begins on the slippery slope, the step leads to another. Police are experts and experts do not take gratuities. Individuals will predict different treatment. Gratuities could wear away the community assurance. There is the slippery slope is possible; the acknowledgement of gratuities can be an entry for more corruption. Police get paid by the community to treat everyone equally. Officer Gregory should get a written warning to stop accepting gratuities since he should know better due to his job performance and accomplishments over the years he served. Officer Gregory committed opportunistic theft. Officer Gregory committed opportunistic theft when he stole two watches from the home invasion victims when no one was around and blamed it on the robber. I would advise Officer Gregory to resign because burglary is a felony crime and his action can affect the entire department and disciplinary action needs to be taken which can lead to imprisonment. It is not unusual for a police officer to turn a blind eye to improper conduct by other officers. Police officers always report serious criminal violations involving abuse of authority by fellow officers. Unity is frequently attended by a code of silence in which officers will not consider unfitting police conduct or may lie about it in order to defend a brother officer, forming what has been called “the blue wall of silence”. The code of silence directs some officers to absolute lying about police misbehavior (direct lies). The code of silence is a risky rival of police accountability and constitutional policing. Police departments are part of the communities that they serve which are influenced by what occurs in those communities. In order to remove or decrease the issue of police code of silence, it is essential that police officers comprehend the unethical and immoral nature of the occurrence. Another feature of the code-of-silence occurrence is to look at it from the position of whistle-blowing. Refusal to discuss unfitting or criminal police behavior, lying about it, or pretending it does not exist, are all examples of failure to blow the whistle.
