Ethics, security, trust, and privacy of information are important in business environments. As an individual, I must adhere to ethical principles and standards that guide my behaviors toward other people in a moral and respectful way. As owner and operator of Connell Appliance, I also have to adhere to ethical principles and standards that guide my behaviors toward other businesses, employees, customers, suppliers, etc. especially when it involves information technology. Likewise, I set policies and procedures for my employees to guide and follow while working at Connell Appliance. Two perks are allowing an employee to check one’s personal email and Internet on business computers; as long as it does not affect the employee’s productivity and one follows the Acceptable Use Policies and Procedures. With that being said, when I inherited Connell Appliance from my grandfather and installed a network computer system, I knew I had to guarantee potential threats associated with one’s behavior regarding the security of business information, what is acceptable in the workplace and what is not acceptable in the workplace, between the business, employees, customers, suppliers, etc. Accordingly, Connell Appliance Acceptable Use Policy and Procedure was implemented to protect, prevent, and administer when an employee uses one’s business computer regarding emails, information systems, and the Internet. Fernandez be reprimanded for her behaviors. As a result, I met with the Human Resources Manager, Ms. Fernandez’s Supervisor, and Ms. Fernandez to discuss her behavior. Ms. Fernandez stated she thought the joke was funny; therefore, sent it via email to her co-workers and did not think it would offend anyone. She apologized for her actions. However, as Ms. Fernandez failed to adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy, she received her first Disciplinary Action that would remain on her record for one year. During the Disciplinary Meeting, Management reminded Ms. Fernandez that during her initial hiring one month ago, she read and signed a Connell Appliance Acceptable Use Policy/Statement of Understanding acknowledging that she understood what is acceptable and not acceptable when an employee uses a business computer regarding emails, information systems, and the Internet. The Policy and Procedure stated no use of profane language, harassing remarks, offense jokes, etc. will be acceptable through emails. It was reiterated to Ms. Fernandez that Policies and Procedures were implemented to ensure employees at Connell Appliance are treated fair and consistent when violations occur and this type of practice will not be tolerated.
