Evaluating The UW Online Course Feedback

Students’ feedback is essential and important to this course. Students were given multiple opportunities to provide both verbal and written feedback regarding the course. Feedbacks were elicited through class conversations, anonymous survey handout during class and also via the UW online course feedback system.

In conversations with students, many understand the course objectives and saw the importance of such course for first-year students. Student expressed that they valued the opportunity to engage in dialogue about their experiences with other students of color. Students stated that this course is one of the few courses on campus that is racially and culturally diverse which helped to make them feel safe and comfortable discussing topic …show more content…

The survey have 19 questions with a mixed of likert scale questions and open-ended questions. The likert scale responses ranged from “no answer” to “strongly agree”. Open-ended questions asked students to make comments about the course, instruction, and diversity. The scores for the likert scale questions will be presented in the table below with 0 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. Students indicated that this was an educational and engaging course that exposed them to resources on campus. One student stated, “I enjoy learning how to better my Wisconsin Experience.” Furthermore, students like that the class was small because it allowed them to get to know their classmate well and also allowed them a space to connect and share their stories with other minority students. For example, one student expressed, “this course opened my mind in becoming more understanding toward others by placing my feet in their shoes before I judge them.”

For areas of improvement, some students felt that the course needed “more structure” as discussions and dialogues can become “too boring and long” especially when not all students talk or engage. Students also asked for more direction and guidance with class assignment. One student suggested having a grading rubric for each assignment. Other students felt that the class was too long and meeting only once a week made it difficult for them to keep track of assignments and readings. Finally, one student wrote, “This course was pointless and time consuming.”
