Animal Testing: What Everyone Should Know In many countries, there are grocery stores and markets overflowing with various everyday products. Soaps, medicines, and cosmetics line shelves and tables, but how do people know they are safe to use? The answer lies within laboratories and medical schools across the world; animal testing. Scientists and medical students use animals as test subjects for products or drugs to make sure they are safe before being sold on the market. This sounds simple on the surface, but this issue carries many positives and negatives that should not go unnoticed. Taking a deeper look and fully understanding the issue is significant for deciding if animal testing should continue or not. Firstly, what drives people to support animal testing and experimentation? One significant reason that many scientists fall back on to justify animal testing is that it protects humans from being harmed. One significant issue with animal testing is the way the animals are treated in the laboratories. New England Anti-Vivisection Society says, “Animals in labs suffer not only pain from protocols, but also severe stress from day-to-day laboratory life. They spend their lives in barren cages, unable to make choices or express natural behaviors.” In addition, most of the animals never even step foot outside, but are kept in cages their entire lives. Because of this, they often show signs of insanity, and have been seen constantly screaming, ripping their own fur out, or even biting themselves. According to “Animal Testing 101”, “Examples of animal tests include forcing mice and rats to inhale toxic fumes, force-feeding dogs pesticides, and dripping corrosive chemicals into rabbits’ sensitive eyes” If this is considered inhumane to perform on humans, why is this cruelty acceptable for
