Differing Viewpoints of Evolution Among Popular Religions

Some religions completely accept evolution and others reject it completely while other religions believe bits and pieces of evolution which causes their followers to become divided in their beliefs. From the Southern Baptists, who completely reject evolution, to Buddhists who accept the theory and see almost no conflicts with it and their faith, there are different viewpoints for almost every religion. Some religions blatantly come out and say “I don’t know,” while others have their own teachings which explain how everything came into being. Still, others change their beliefs over time. While Buddhists do not completely agree with the theory of evolution, it is an accepted theory as to how life began in this religion. In a 2008 poll regarding religion in the U.S., 81% of Buddhists believe in evolution, the highest among all major religions in the U.S. (Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life 2008). This religion teaches that God created all life and everything around us, but they still accept evolution. Even though they teach that there is a creator, they are not for sure how the universe was made. Many who follow Judaism do not believe that the word “yom” actually means a day. Instead, they believe it could be any amount of time, allowing for the acceptance of evolution. Judaism still follows teaching from a 12th century Jewish philosopher named Maimonides. He said that "what the Torah writes about the Account of Creation is not all to be taken literally, as believed by the masses” (RCA, 2005).
