The Evolution of a Young Writer From hours pouring over a laptop screen and numerous cups of coffee, a great amount of growth has come from the last few months. A second semester has afforded me the opportunity to evolve as a college student. Different from the first semester, these past few months have moved past adjustment and onto growth as an individual. Among the greatest chances for evolution that I have come to acknowledge are that of my abilities as a writer. Writing is arguably one of the most prominent aspects of a student’s academic career. After reading their papers, I became more confident about my own work. I could look at the writing style and techniques that my classmates used in their essay and decide how the same techniques could translate to my own writing. For example, by looking at how my peers incorporated dialogue in their essays, I could look back to my essay in revision and apply my discovery. The verbal aspect of the peer reviews also broke up the monotony of the average writing or English class. Both me and my peers were given the opportunity to discuss our feelings and thoughts on our papers in a group setting rather than in a traditional setting. The atmosphere itself is changed in a circle of students as opposed to a comment directed toward the professor in a typical classroom setting. This helped me to better vocalize the concerns that I had about papers toward others who had the same concerns about their own papers. Prior to this class, I did not recognize the notion that many different types of writing existed. Despite only writing four essays over the course of the semester, it was interesting to note the distinctness of each essay type. A memoir, for instance, could be written about a specific part or time in life. However, a reflective essay could then be written on the topic in a different manner. Although these two types of essays are comparable to one another, it is interesting to note that each had different components that made them more effective in conveying their intended message. The same concept proved to be true of a research paper and an argumentative paper. Both papers were on topics that were universally understandable, because they included different quotations from varying sources. Yet, similar to a journalist article, the research paper is unbiased and attempts to relay information toward the better appreciation of the topic by the reader. On the other hand, an argumentative essay had far more leeway for we were given the opportunity to argue for something that we felt strongly one way or another about. This meant that I could write on any appropriate topic and, for once, the content was not necessarily what I nor the professor was focused on. Among the first time in my academic career the focus was placed on my writing, as a whole. I
