During the past five weeks I have grown not only has a leader but as a Chief. I will share with you what classes and experiences impacted me the most. Two of these are classes, one being the LPI assessment it provided great insight in how I’m viewed by my subordinates, peers, and managers. The next was the generation’s class which gave me a different way of looking at my interactions with people younger and older than me. And lastly just talking to my fellow Chiefs in the class helped me grow and realize that there is a whole other Coast Guard out there.
The LPI assessment was an eye opening look at how I’m viewed by subordinates, peers, and managers at achieving results and at my leadership style. What really stood out to me was how everyone viewed the job I was doing, I had great numbers from everyone expect from one person. That one person was myself, I was the hardest person on myself in just about every category. In the comment section of my assessment I received plenty of praise for the job I’m doing but a couple people mentioned I need to be more confident, after contemplating this for sometime it made perfect sense. Each generation has unique reasons why they hold on to certain values. They all had distinct events and challenges they had to overcome in order to progress. And because of that they each respond differently to leadership and have preferred traits that they look for in leadership and interactions.
