In the play Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare developed the sense of duty between one’s parents and one’s lover. He showed how duty to your parents does not last forever and can change to another person who you think is worthy of it. This was shown in the play as when Juliet met and fell in love with Romeo her duty to her family and parents then moved to Romeo. Initially, Juliet was dutiful to her parents. We can see this in the play when her parents arrange a marriage with Paris, and Juliet says that she will “look to like, if looking liking move”. Showing that Juliet was dutiful to her parents as she would consider marrying a stranger if she likes him for her parents. This is shown when she refuses to marry Paris saying, “He shall not make me there a joyful bride” proving that she was so in love with Romeo that her duties and loyalties to her parents were starting to change. Today teenagers can learn from this as duty to your parents doesn’t last. Juliet became so reliant on Romeo and her duty to him was so strong that she couldn’t live without him. This was shown in the play when she woke up and found Romeo dead. She then stabbed herself with his dagger saying “O happy dagger, this is thy sheath. There rust and let me die”. Thus, proving that she couldn’t live without him as her duty was towards Romeo and was so strong that she had to kill herself. From this, Teenagers can learn that duty changes and loyalty needs to be transferred to the new love or teenagers would always be in their parent's
