Everyone’s has heard about the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, but have you actually ever sat back and thought about who was actually to blame for their tragic death? Nobody forced Romeo and Juliet to commit suicide. Yes, they were forced to believe there was no other way to for them be together, but nobody made physically made them kill themselves. Everyone in this play played a part in their death. So many people were to blame for them thinking that was the only way out, but the only people who are actually responsible for their death is none other than, themselves. Juliet said “What if this mixture do not work at all? Shall I be married then tomorrow morning? No, no! This shall forbid it. Lie thou there.” She told her Nurse in Act IV Scene III that if their plan didn't go well, then she’d kill herself with a dagger (which she ended up doing.) She took the sleeping potion with the mindset of killing herself if the plan didn't work. Nobody made her decide to do that, or make that plan. In Act V Scene II, Romeo believed Juliet was dead, so he said, “Here’s to my love! [drinks] O true apothecary! Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die.” He drank the potion himself and decided for himself that if he couldn't be with Juliet then he didn't want to be with anyone. He killed himself so he’s responsible for his own death. And in Act V Scene III is when Juliet kills herself. “Yea, noise? Then I’ll be brief. O happy dagger! [snatches Romeo’s dagger] This is thy sheath; there rust, and let me die.” She stabbed herself because Romeo kills himself. She knew that she was going to kill herself if the plan didn't work out, and she did. She truly believed that her and Romeo had to be together, and she was going to kill herself to be with them. Something could've been worked out. A lot of people say that the two families were responsible for their death, but how? They didn't know what their children were feeling! Their kids didn't even tell their parents that they wanted to be with each other. Yeah, they should've stopped fighting, but how could they know their kids wanted to be with each other and they were going to attempt to runoff together and then kill themselves because their plan didn't work? Other people might say that Friar Laurence was in charge of their death, but they came to him for help. They asked him what they should do, he was only trying to help. It's his job in his profession to help people when their in need. It's not like he could tell their parents what they were planning, what they were telling him was confidential, and if he told anyone he’d be sinning and he wouldn't be trustworthy anymore. In the eyes of his religion, it was extremely wrong to tell anyone what was said in confession. The congregation wouldn't respect him anymore. He was only helping them to the best of his ability. He thought what he was doing was the right way to do it. People could say the apothecary killed Romeo because he sold the poison to him, but he was only doing what he needed to
