Recently I read the book, Tangerine. The story is about a boy named Paul Fisher and his family moving to Tangerine, Florida. The theme is even though it appears perfect on the outside, the inside is grotesque. In this passage, there are many ugly things that happen to Paul and his family. Beguile occurrences take place in the form of a muck fire, sinkhole, and thievery.
Erik did not stop Castor, but rather helped him. If Erik had been a good brother, this wouldn’t have happened. Erik also made Paul view himself as a coward. Throughout the book,
The first big choice that Erik made that affected Paul was when he hit Tino in the face.(205) “Immediately, faster than I thought he could, faster than Tino thought he could, Erik lashed out, smashing the back of his hand across Tino’s face, smashing him so hard that Tino spun halfway around in the air and landed on the grass. Erik did this because Tino made fun of him and he got angry. This affected Paul because he didn't do anything, it made him feel small. Paul says, “ I just stared back at her, paralyzed with fear, while the scene rolled on.”(204) This shows that Paul knew Erik was going to do something bad, he did nothing.
At this part of the novel Paul finally is done with keeping quiet about Erik. In doing so, Erik comes to confront him telling him it wouldn’t work. Then, in the book, Paul says,” I raised my finger like it was loaded, and pointed it at Arthur. ”I saw you kill Luis Cruz””(Bloor 262). After saying this, Paul feels as if he is free and is no longer chained up in his lies.
The most important way Erik impacts Paul is he causes Paul’s life to become full of constant fear and anxiety. This is proven by Bloor when his character Paul states, “I have always been afraid of Erik” (42). Paul has been afraid of Erik his entire life, as Bloor indicates by this quote. The quote also gives the reason why Paul tries to avoid Erik, and sets up the
But Paul had a reason to think that Erik might try to kill him. At the end of the novel though Paul stood up to Erik and told the truth to his parent’s the police and everyone else that Erik killed Luis
I didn’t know how to describe the harm he would do to me.” (38). If I was ever threatened like Erik does to Paul, I wouldn’t have the guts to say anything either.
In the novel Tangerine the motif of sight is used both literally and figuratively. Paul and his mother see that Paul is an important, but Dad and Erik think is more important because of the Erik Fisher Football Dream. Paul sees that Erik is a bad friend and brother but his parents don’t . Paul's mom and dad notice the koi are disappearing, but they don’t know that the koi are being eaten by the osprey but Paul does. Paul does not see his actions are affecting other and making them do things.
It was a hot sunny evening in the Salinas River in Soledad. One side of the river had beautiful hills and mountains covering the earth. On the other side green vegetation near the edge of the river. Rabbits, lizards, and birds enjoyed another wonderful day but for George and Lennie it was the beginning of the end of a tough journey. Authors often use characters in their novels to help reflect the importance of their work.
Around the same section, Erik says the name “Castor” which triggers a memory Paul had blocked for a long time, the truth behind his visual impairment and that Erik was at fault for it. This led to Paul accepting it was not his fault and he finally stopped blaming himself for it. In conclusion, Paul started off as a wimpy, fearful kid who ended up finding a lot about himself and turned out a strong, independent young man. He had an incredible arch of character development throughout the entire novel, with changes in himself and the outside of him.
In the stories “The Man Who Never Lied” and “The Captain’s Party” the characters similar traits and events impact the story and convey the theme that if a person is honest he or she gets respect. One way that the king was honest was when he said “the man didn’t lie “. The king was telling the queen that the girl was lying. The story was the man who thought he never lied.

Paul and Farouk have something to hide, but each keeps their secret for different reasons. First, Farouk was hiding his identity because Sang did not know any friends or family relating to him. Also, he never wanted to spend time with her housemate as the author says, “ He never said hello or good bye; instead, he behaved as if Sang was the sole occupant of the house. They never sat in the living room, or in the kitchen” (186).

It is almost impossible to keep a secret in the world of today. There are countless social media sites and other technological advancements have made keeping something from others virtually impossible. Although, in the 19th century, it was extremely likely that one could take a secret, even of the utmost importance, to the grave. In Oscar Wilde's “Lady Windermere's Fan” the main source of conflict stems from the relationship between Lord Windermere and Mrs. Erlynne. They are the holders of a secret that, if revealed, could entirely alter their lives.
