In the book Tangerine, By Edward Bloor, an important choice paul made was when he chose to change schools and go to Tangerine Middle School. Paul chose to change schools so he could restart his school year and reputation, and is shown when the author states,” Football and soccer season happen at the same time,dad, it’s ok if you can’t pay attention to both, just let me go to Tangerine Middle School. I wouldn’t be the waterboy, I would be the goalie”(Bloor 194). This choice impacted paul and the plot greatly,which is stated when the author says,” I want to go to Tangerine MS with no IEP.
After Luis passed away, Paul felt like a new person : “I feel like Luis is apart of me now” (252). At the end of the book , Paul stood up to the police and told them the truth about what happened . Paul exclaims , “ I stood straight up and faced them, like I had seen Luis do” (284) . Paul would have never stood up if Luis wasn’t there with him . Some readers may think Paul was over exaggerating but in the moment Bloor clearly reveals that Luis has became part of Paul’s conscience .
In the realistic fiction novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor, Paul is the protagonist or the main character in the story, and his brother Erik is the antagonist or the character who opposes the main character. In many cases, the protagonist is the character the reader is rooting for, and the antagonist is the character that the reader is rooting against. This is why as the reader we are rooting for Paul instead of Erik the antagonist.
In this book, Paul has many flashbacks and most of them show how much fear Paul has of Erik. On page 33 and 34, Paul has a flashback. “Something about the wall... something I needed to remember... A scene came back to me... Erik and his friends laughed about the joke.”
The first big choice that Erik made that affected Paul was when he hit Tino in the face.(205) “Immediately, faster than I thought he could, faster than Tino thought he could, Erik lashed out, smashing the back of his hand across Tino’s face, smashing him so hard that Tino spun halfway around in the air and landed on the grass. Erik did this because Tino made fun of him and he got angry. This affected Paul because he didn't do anything, it made him feel small. Paul says, “ I just stared back at her, paralyzed with fear, while the scene rolled on.”(204) This shows that Paul knew Erik was going to do something bad, he did nothing.
Then he brought it forward in a mighty swing, right at my head.” Later Paul tells his parents that Erik is trying to kill him but Erik was in the house with them.
Tangerine Literary Analysis In the novel Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, the main character Paul Fisher has been affected by his brother Erik Fisher in many ways. When Paul and his family moved to Tangerine, he got strange flashbacks and came closer to the truth of why he went blind. He faces bullying, death, and tragic things at Tangerine because of his brother Erik. Nevertheless Erik moved the plot forward while making Paul grow as a person.
”It made paul feel a bit betrayed .The bond between Joey and Paul was loosening. Paul could tell Joey was hiding things because Joey was not telling him why he will not play for tangerine. One last example is on page 147 when Paul asked Joey if Theresa is going to show her around. Joey asked, “What do I need a guide dog for?”
Another example of Paul discovering more about himself is when he finally remembers what happened to his eyes. “And I remembered Erik’s fingers prying my eyelids open while Vincent Castor sprayed white paint into them” (264). Paul is trading his literal eyesight in this quote for a figurative form of sight. He is able to “see” Erik for who he is and Paul can “see” who he is, meaning why he is afraid o f Erik and lifting his self-esteem as well as his understanding of himself. In both quotes Paul is either seeing (not recognizing himself as a hero) or seeing (flashback of Erik) aspects of his own life and personality and why he is the way he is, changing how he feels about
He feels that Luis’s spirit is still alive. Another example is also set during the time when Paul is
Paul goes into the club and sooner than later they are forced out. Paul decided that he isn't going to quit and heads back in while telling Norman to go. Like an older brother Norman doesn’t want to go, but after many shouts form Paul, Norman decides that it’s best for him to leave. Paul is all for independence. Knowing that he hasn’t lived up to his fathers expectations he refuses financial and moral support.
Paul also had a different mindset than everyone else like Sonny did, and people did not understand
Instead, the answer conveys Paul’s strong desire to stick to his current behavior rather than to conform to anything that is promised to improve his current life. Furthermore, the most conclusive thing Paul steals money from his father, which is obviously illegal and a great risk, to help him run away from his dull life to New York. Yet, what stands out from his characteristic is that Paul never regrets any of the past deeds that he has done, after experiencing the life he so long yearned for. Willa Cather’s short story, “Paul’s Case” is about a young man who is determined to make his aspirations a reality by all means necessary. That meant being deceitful as a start of gaining control and social status and telling lies to get to where he felt like he belonged, but where did he belong? This desire was the beginning of a journey that would eventually leave him with nothing. There is something unusual about Paul, something that can only be explained by his demeanor and actions throughout the story. With that said, I intend to construct a complete character analysis of Paul as he searches for satisfaction.
Paul is a cold-blooded killer, who displays “apathy.” He easily manipulates others. One can feel that he can’t be trusted. He makes for a good foe. Victor, at this point, isn’t as well understood regarding his motivation.
