In “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, the author uses diction like abstract diction and details by explaining what he exactly wants in life to demonstrate Walter and his dream. To begin, Hansberry uses diction to demonstrate Walter and his dream by using abstract diction. She does this by explaining how he will give Travis anything for his seventeenth birthday and that he will “hand you the world!” (2.2). This shows that he wants to make his sons life as good as possible.
Malcolm Gladwell, a journalist, who was talking about a person named Howard Moskowitz in TED talk, who changed the world of the food industry by his unique way of thinking. Moskowitz’s innovations about having choices changed people’s way of thinking towards food tasting. During the TED talk, Gladwell talked about one of Moskowitz’s experiment with spaghetti sauce and how he started his experiment by making three groups of spaghetti sauces: plain, spicy and extra chunky and asked people which type of sauce would they prefer. Of course, people at that time didn’t even know what extra chunky spaghetti sauce is.
Al Gore exhibits an intense fascination with global warming in the world. Al Gore is hoping for an incline in the observance of global warming in today’s humans. To inspire change in the young minds of today Al Gore uses an emotional appeal to draw the audience in and establish a common ground. My rhetoric analysis is on an open letter to Starbucks after the author discovered the company’s involvement with Planned Parenthood. I found the letter through a link on Facebook, as all great pieces of literature are discovered. Some background knowledge may be needed about the accusations being made towards Planned Parenthood, although the author goes into lots of detail explaining these accusations, which are that Planned Parenthood is taking highly developed fetuses from the abortions that they perform and selling them. This open letter is written to the Starbucks Corporation, but it is an open letter, so the audience also includes patrons of Starbucks. In Jobs’ speech, he uses many rhetorical devices to inform us, such as repetition, stories, and humor, to provide powerful context and inform the audience that he goes through some of the same things we do, struggles and pain, but also love and happiness. However, because we don’t know what death is, it isn’t strange that we fear it. People like to have control over things. And when we can’t control something, we fear it. Throughout the years, we took more and more control over nature, for example, building a dam to protect ourselves from the water, but we still cannot control earthquakes, and therefore we fear them.
Jarrell Yves L. Chua CSETHICS Aaron Swartz’s political advocacy was about the freedom of information to the public. He wanted to give the people the free access to academic journals, federal court documents, government issues, etc. He didn’t like the idea of having to pay for information or knowledge that a person should learn or know. I think that his main concern were the marginalized sectors, wherein they don’t have free access to knowledge, news, and other important documents. As a college student, I definitely agree with his political advocacy because a lot of people will benefit from it.
In the 2005 speech presented by Steve Jobs he asserts to the audience that it is better to take chances in life and be happy, which also leads to him explaining the morals of his life within three stories. Jobs’ speech appeals to emotion because it makes the audience think about the situation at hand, especially in their personal lives. During your journey, you are the ultimate ruler of what happens and what does not happen, but along the way, people will try to guide you and give you the best advice that they can.
