Exophthalmos Exophthalmos is a disorder where fluid and tissue builds up around the eye. Eventually, this build-up of tissue pushes the eye forward out of orbit, causing massive complications associated with vision changes. Exophthalmos, however, is a secondary condition, which means it derives from the causes of other diseases, such as Grave’s Disease and Hyperthyroidism. As stated previously, exophthalmos is a secondary condition. The most common source of Exophthalmos is an imbalance of the thyroid gland. This gland produces important hormones that contribute to regulating growth, metabolism, and development.
