Good professional relationships with parents require thought, skill and consideration. Early years workers will need to develop good relationships with parents and have good communication with the parent or carer. When parents have strong relationships with their child’s key worker which may be a practitioner who takes responsibility for a child’s emotional wellbeing by having a strong attachment with them, and a good relationship with their parents; parents are often more likely to feel more confident about leaving their child at the early years setting and will help with the child settling in. Parents are also likely to share information with the early year’s workers when they feel confident, which can help and ensure that the child’s individual needs are met. Every practitioner needs to have strong communication skills this is because parents may ask a question of a member of staff who is not the child’s key person. There are benefits of effective communication for example parents will find it easier to leave their child as they trust the staff and separation may be easier. Parents are also more likely to share significant information that may help the workers meet the children needs, and staff and parents can find it easier to ask questions or make comments without being misunderstood. Effective communication is also important as parents are able to become engaged with the care and education of their children which can have a positive effect on children’s achievement. Good communication reduces the likelihood of misunderstanding and allows for quick clarification if they do arise.
