Today in society there a lot of elders on the roads. For my bill I would like to mandate the restest of drivers over the age of 70. They will be required to take the road and written test so they can renew their licences over the age of 70. I wrote this bill because there are a lot of elders in society today where they have illnesses that can cause them to forget things. The goal of my legislation is to mandate the restest of drivers over the age of 70 so they are safe on our roads. There is a elders drivers on the road today. If they were to ever to get in an accident they would most likely get hurt. Statistically speaking per mile traveled fatal crashes increase at the age of 75 and rise sharply after the age of 80. If they get into accidents and get injured if the crash was serious enough they could do some pretty bad damage to them or others. Therefore, elders drivers around the age of 75 and 80 fatal crashes increase. …show more content…
Elders who have some issues may restrict them from operating their vehicle. 80 percent of people in their 70’s suffer from arthritis. Arthritis is the inflammation of the joints and if drivers over the age of 70 have that it makes it harder for them to turn the wheel. If they can not turn the wheel they can get in an accident. Drivers over the age of 70 who have weaker muscles, reduced flexibility and limited range of motion restrict them the ability to grip and turn the steering wheel, press the accelerator or brake. Therefore, 80 percent of drivers over the age 70 suffer from arthritis which makes it harder for them to control their
There are merely any articles that argue against having the elderly retake the driving test. One article that I found was called, Make the elderly retake driving tests by Peter Moore. In this article, the author tells us about the states that require seniors to retake their driving test and their different requirement. It also shows us statistical percentages of the people that disagree, as well as agree with this idea. It also compares it to the different ages from 18 and up and showed how the older the person gets the more they disagree with making senior retake their driving test.
Older drivers, over the age of sixty-five, are not only a threat to others- but to themselves. There are several ways that this can be resolved. Not all of these are particularly kind, as they would generalize the population and limit people because of something they cannot control. As people age, they tend to lose cognitive and physical capability. In some cases the drivers vision and hearing can become impaired making it more difficult to focus on what is going on around them.
Delaying the start of driving may just delay that learning and shift the crash rates more toward the 18- and 19-year-olds” (Celeste, 2022). People would say, letting them drive when they're younger so they can have more experience. But, that is just saying they dont have the experience to do that. It is also said that 16-17 year olds are not emotionally mature. 18-year-olds are more likely to make smart decisions without giving in to peer pressure than 16-year-olds.
Everyone's so busy complaining about how there's always so many kids driving and that their bad at driving. But they never realised that the older people are getting in more wrecks than the kids do, the older people cant see very well which causes them to merge into someone else's lane and push them off the road. For example, My grandpa has had
They also have the fear of not seeing other cars or people while driving in bad conditions, which causes the anxiety to affect their driving even more due to their focus being on how they can’t see the road. Younger people are more likely to pull to the side of the road and wait until the bad conditions pass, but older people are more likely to only focus on driving through it rather than pull to the side of the road. Weather conditions are a bigger factor for elderly drivers rather than younger drivers due to their existing vision problems and effects of fear. If an elderly loved one insists on driving, take them to retake their driving test to determine if they will not only put others in danger but also themselves in danger while on the road. When elderly drivers
People trying to raise the minimum driving age need to remember being 16 and society as a whole should support these young
“Slow response time, loss of clarity in vision and hearing, loss of muscle strength and flexibility, drowsiness due to medications, and a reduction in the ability to focus or concentrate” are all effects of aging identified in Westport News’s March 2010 article “Should elderly drivers be retested?” 2. Although some older drivers try to make up for these disabilities by driving more cautious, driving below the speed limit can cause more dangers. B. Cause 2: The trend of increases in fatal accidents involving elderly people is partially due to an increased susceptibility to injury and medical complications within this age group. Transition 3: While car accidents involving the elderly is a widespread issue, there are multiple solutions that can be implemented to reduce the likelihood of this occurring.
Many people believe that age doesn’t matter, it’s only the experience that does. Others say age plays a big role due to the fact that the younger the people are, the less mature they act. There are so many reasons to why the driving age should be raised. Thousands of people wonder what could be done to prevent all these tragic fatalities and between all those debates raising the legal age for driving has been the most controversial. Car accidents are reported every day.
When a teen is driving they are in control and they have to be aware of their surroundings. Driving has taught me how to be more responsible. A sixteen-year-old has to learn to become more responsible when driving a vehicle because if they are not being responsible then they could cause an accident or get a ticket for not obeying the laws. When I am driving I have to be responsible enough to follow the rules and not be a reckless driver. When driving I have to be aware of other drivers that may be careless, as hwy could cause me to be in an accident.
Learning to drive while you are still young makes driving at an older age less difficult. This would also prevent many accidents that could occur. In the not so distant future, the amount of accidents would triple due to the amount of adults attempting to learn what an adolescent should.
It is not as common for adults to text and drive. Adults have more experience behind the wheel in a car than the youth do. Yet most of the time when they get a text there eyes go from the road to there phone.
Most of us teenager usually forget what they have studied during in driving school especially about road laws and usually break them without realizing the consequences for example running red light, U turning at no U turn junction and speeding. i. If we all agree using this act, all of them will always remember and obey all the road laws. This will also help them to drive more careful and make them think twice before breaking the law. ii.
Ageism is like a double edge sword and leaves those between 30-60 years old in the middle. On one side you have the younger generation of young kids up to those in their late 20’s. Society has this notion that if you are young you know nothing, and are irresponsible. This notion is a very prominent one when it comes to younger people in the workforce and is one I encounter at work quite frequently. Being one of the younger waitresses , when a customer doesn’t like the answer I give them they assume I am not sure what I am talking about and the I am inexperienced.
Nowadays, crash rates increase as the driving age decreases. In reference to Associate Professor of Law, William and Mary School of Law, (Hamilton, 2012), studies have shown that car crashes are more prevalent among sixteen years olds. However they tend to decrease as the age rises. The more mature a person is and the more experience they’ve gone through, the less likely they are to be involved in a car crash. Basically, inexperience in driving shows a secondary part in younger ages.
Everybody looks forward to the day they turn 16 and take their road test for their driver’s license. Getting a driver’s license is like a gateway into adulthood, a right of passage some people may say. It’s been like this for years, ever since the early 20th century, when it was mandated for licenses to be issued to anyone wishing to operate one or more motor vehicles. In spite of the fact that this has been the norm for quite a while, there are people out there who wish to place more stern regulations such as raising the driving age. Although implementing stricter driving laws may seem a better option, it doesn’t always have superior outcomes to its countering opinion.
