Young children from three to five years of age, use their hands to explore and learn about the environment and themselves. Children progress from scribbling and drawing, to trying to form letters and writing real letters and words. By developing good hand skills and other pre-writing skills you will prepare your child for the next step, which is writing. When your child asks you to “read” her scribbles, you know she or he is aware that speech is represented by symbols (letters of the alphabet). We point to signs and symbols we notice at home and during our walks, we can show children e.g. that a sign on the toilet door shows if it is for boys or girls.
We also point to symbols and marks of different countries (e.g. Chinese script which they see on boxes).
We encourage scribbling activities, children can scribble on paper, in sand, flour, or other interesting materials
