According to Child Care Aware of America, Nearly 11 million children under the age of 5 in America are in some kind of child care every week. Long amounts time in daycare has shown that it causes aggressive behavior and poor social skills in children. In a LiveStrong article they state that, “Children who are in daycare for a year or more have been shown to be more disruptive in class as long as into the sixth grade, according to a New York Times report on the Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development” (Magher). They also said that children are more moody and have more conflict with other students. FamilyFacts.org also presnted the idea that stay-at-home parenting is beneficial.
In the negative part of the daycare today are 1-a non stimulating environment, 2-no emotional support from caregivers, 3- too many children,4- an unsafe environment, 5- an unhealthy environment, activities don't promote mental, physical, social and emotional growth,6- state licensing requirements aren't followed,7- a lack of open communication. 24-hour daycare services have become increasingly popular over the years as parents have started to work nontraditional hours more and more. 24-hour daycares entail services that are opened not only during the day, but also over night; these services may also accommodate parents and guardians who work weekends and holidays. Daycare services that are open 24 hours give families who work flexible shifts and hours the opportunity to have peace of mind when it comes to the care of their children. Although there are many pros to having 24-hour daycare services available to all, there are also many setbacks to the idea of these services; I will now give an analysis of both the pros and cons of having 24-hour daycare services. The two pieces of writing that I will be discussing through the course of my essay is “Mary Barton” by Elizabeth Gaskell and “The Cry of the Children” by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. This would provide families more possibilities with their job choices, and will also offer a tremendous relief for families struggling to find adequate childcare. Finding exceptional, dependable and reasonably priced childcare, while trying to work is one of the biggest difficulties families have to deal with. Industrialization helped the creation of daycares because the women would go to work and leave their kids at home, alone; as a result someone came up with the idea of a daycare. This happened during World War I because men were drafted to the war effort and women stayed to support the country by doing the jobs that men had left behind. Women would go to work and leave their kids in daycares.
Once you open an in-home daycare, you must realize that it’s no longer just “home”- it is now your business. People are going to be coming into your home five days a week and your home is going to begin to show the “wear and tear” of taking care of a group of children day in and day out. Children do not maliciously damage your home- but accidents are going to happen and toddlers simply don’t realize how strong they truly are. Your walls are going to end up with dents. You are going to need to repaint- often.
I want to run a daycare center called Healthy Childhoods in Austin, TX in 6 to 7 years. It’ll focus on kids being healthier in mind and body. This includes lessons on hygiene, dental care and fun activities that simulate the mind and body. I feel Austin is a very health conscience city that will appreciate a place that promotes kids growing up healthy. My short term goal is to find employment for 5 years straight working with kids.
Dr. Laura Schlesinger believes that daycare is in between sinister and cruel, which might be an overly emotional description, daycare is not what is best for a family or a child, but by no means is it cruel. Kids need socialization, with people their age, day care can offer that to them, which is a positive. However, daycare also lacks the discipline, and usually the care, that a parent can give, causing the overall structure of a family to fall apart. Without discipline, children become unruly and spoiled, and lack respect and cause problems where problems don’t lie. Without daycare services being provided for students, having a job or trying to keep a job can be difficult for teenage parents who want to continue their high school education and prepare for the future. There should be daycare centers available at high schools because it would lower dropout rates, make life easier for teenage parents, and provide children with safety. Although, people say that daycare in school makes it a welfare state. “This is money that schools are using to find help for families who have been left high and dry by cuts to public services”(Kershaw, n.d).
I choose to view the video clip, Maggie Simpson in “The longest Daycare”. There are some entertaining pieces in the clip one being in the beginning when they test Maggie’s intelligence with the equipment manufactured by Often Wrong Technologies and going through the security check in the beginning. However, the video reveals how society often views people’s intelligence without often knowing how smart that person maybe. Maggie shows her intelligence when she encounters her first case of bullying.
A daycare with high quality provides plenty of benefits for children. Daycare teaches children to learn, share, take turns, and prepare each child for onset task for school. Daycare helps children to ease separation anxiety, and get used to being around other people. To find an excellent high-quality daycare you will have to start with the basics. For instance trained caregivers, who are committed to the center; along with a clean play area.
There can be positive as well as negative effects. There can also be short term or long term effects depending on the individual child and how effectively they are supported. Short terms effects on children in times of transitioning can include:- • Regression – if a child struggles to cope with a transition they may revert to the earlier stages of development. • Physical well-being – in the short term a child’s physical well-being may be effected as their immune system is not as effective as fighting illness.
