When establishing a faculty career development program for a higher education institution, it is important to ensure the faculty development unit aligns the programs priorities with those of the institution. When the mission, vison, and management of the program align with the goals of the institution, the new initiative will highlight how it is actually being useful in “assisting the institution in reaching its strategic goals” (Gillespie & Robertson, 2010, p.140). Due to the increasing demands in fiscal responsibility and accountability within higher education, more documentation is needed in order to validate the impact of a units work. An effective assessment will aid in the decision making process and improve a unit’s practice (Gillespie & Robertson, 2010). When developing program assessments, members of the field need to ensure they are making sense of the data they are retrieving and are not becoming overwhelmed by it.
In addition, development teams need to be aware that needs assessment “do not provide much information about the surrounding culture;” therefore, the initial step of ensuring useful data about faculty members and their preferences is provided for reference (Gillespie & Robertson, 2010, p.140). Development teams need to ensure they are asking the appropriate questions concerning the culture surrounding their faculty members and gain feedback that can help them with development of new
