It has become common today to dismiss how fast food affects health worldwide. In David Zinczenko’s article, “Don’t Blame the Eater,” he emphasizes that fast food chains are contributing to the ongoing concern of obesity in America. In discussion of obesity, one controversial issue in “Don’t Blame the Eater” has been that fast food chains do not combine calorie information with their advertising meals. On the one hand, he asserts his unfortunate encounter with fast food throughout his childhood to further highlight his standing against fast food chain commerce. On the other hand, Zinczenko argues that diabetes in children have had a significant increase in a decade due to fast food.
To live humans need three main things: water, food, and the ability to breath. Although we do need to drink beverages and eat food we must have some that fulfill the health requirements that we need to live. With fast-food restaurants becoming more popular people have neglected their health in order to eat more junk food. This report focuses on McDonald’s, Burger King, and Tim Horton’s food and their nutrition levels. All these meal unhealthy, but some are more unhealthy than others.
Because of the growing fast food industry, an abundance of these inexpensive meals containing empty calories, little fiber, and high amounts of fat are now easily accessible to adults and children. According to Fast Food Nation, “the rate of obesity among American adults is twice as high today as it was in the early 1960s. The rate of obesity among American children is twice as high as it was in the late 1970s” (240), and according to a nutritionist at the University of Colorado, James O. Hill, “we’ve got the fattest, least fit generation of kids ever” (240). A failed number of attempts to reduce the possibility of obesity in customers by introducing healthier dishes on their menus demonstrates how much the fast food industry has changed the way we live and eat.
Since 2004 the obesity rate in America has grown, along with the fast food industry. The obesity rate in 2001 was 61%, in 2010 it increased to higher than 68%. (Collene). According to Center for Science in the public interest, eating out is one-third of the calories in American’s diets (“Menu Labeling”). However, there has been some changes since Supersize Me was released that have changed in order to help the obesity epidemic.
The Dark Side of All American Meal. The main reason and purpose of this book was written in attempt to us Americans to see the “Dark Side” of the fast food industry. Throughout the book professor of nutrition science Eric Schlosser tries to explain and point out that fast food is a key force that is impacting almost nearly every aspect in America within our health, politics, economy, and the society we live in today. The significant theme represented in this book is based on the health and production of the fast food industry and how it has rapidly evolved over time.
After hearing John Cisna’s story, I now have a stronger support of fast food than I did before. I have always liked eating at fast food restaurants because the food is inexpensive and tastes good. My family and I ate fast food when we would travel, but I thought that the food was unhealthy. John Cisna was able to eat McDonald’s food for ninety days, not only did he survive this time, but he also lost weight, lowered his cholesterol levels, and decreased his blood pressure. According to this study, fast food is not as unhealthy as I had believed.
This study shows that other countries are understanding the risks of unhealthy fast food and unhealthy ingredients and making changes. On the other hand, Americans continue to ignore these proven facts about unhealthy foods. Since America is known to have fast food chains around every corner, it comes with the risk of obesity and poor health in general. Obesity in America Obesity rates in America have been rapidly growing since 1980’s. The food portions have been getting larger and the regular exercise has been getting smaller. In America, the more people eat the less they exercise. The groups of people that are becoming more affected are those with the lower income. American’s are becoming more obese every year, especially those with the lower incomes.

Americans tend to buy the cheaper, more processed foods. These types of foods can lead to obesity, which is now prevalent in the young children population.
