No matter where people go, there are always a fast food restaurant or vending machines filled with unhealthy products everywhere. A Yale University psychology professor states, “While you’re pumping gas you punch in Fritos, the Twinkies and the Coke, and somebody brings it to your car. So the physical activity required to go in and get is eliminated.” (Murray). Fast food industries make it difficult to prevent obesity from local communities, since fast food restaurants are placed at every corner.

When the 1970s introduced High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a cheap sweetener alternative to sucrose in a fructose-glucose liquid form (fifty five percent fructose, forty two percent glucose, and three percent saccharides), it brought extensive numbers of health problems with it (Bray, 2004 & Johnson, 2010 ). Prior to the 70’s, on average, sugar contributed to four percent of daily caloric intake, however over the past four and a half decades, this statistic has increased to whopping sixteen percent, leading some scientist to consider it an “addiction” as they observe the sugar substitute wreak havoc on humans’ bodies worldwide (Butler, 2011). There are 3 causes of why childhood obesity has increased. First, Most foods have high levels of fructose corn syrup. Fructose corn syrup is defined as “High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sweetener made from corn found in thousands of foods and beverages on grocery store shelves throughout the United States. HFCS is composed of either 42 percent or 55 percent fructose, with the remaining sugars being primarily glucose and higher sugars.
Although high fructose corn syrup may be a contributor to obesity, it is not the main cause. H.F.C.S. may not be the culprit, overeating is one of the most crucial factors of obesity. Most Americans eat portions that are beyond healthy. Studies show that over the last twenty years, food portions in American’s restaurants have doubled or even tripled. This distorted the amount of food people think is healthy for them at home and when eating out.
The Truth of Obesity Fast food has been around for decades and it is an industry which will continue to grow, it is because of this main reason why so many Americans are now obese. Along with the lack of education and knowledge that many Americans are decrease their life span. However, obesity has never been such a vast problem as it stands today with its large population of uneducated and fast food hungry Americans. With this massive epidemic that is taking over America, comes many health issues and its targets begin with the children who become addicted to unhealthy but satisfying meals suffering from overweight, high cholesterol, and blood pressure to name a few.
There is nothing more unfair than the phrase “you are what you eat.” This simple sentence translates to “if you eat unhealthy, you will look unhealthy”, and vice versa. This statement fails to recognize the fact that many people who are unhealthy or obese may not be the only ones to blame for their figures. In America, a third of adults and nearly a fourth of children under the age of twelve are now classified as obese. Obviously, the obesity epidemic is an enormous issue. However, I think it is extremely unfair to assume that people who are overweight are the only ones to blame for this epidemic.
Over the years more and more Americans have become victims to obesity. As our foods are being packed with salt and fat, our plates are growing bigger and bigger. Fast foods have contributed to obesity for decades. According to ABC News, over the past twenty years soft drinks have increased by 52 percent. Americans have always believed bigger was better so fast food chains have always competed on who gave more food for the better deal.
Okay so here’s my opinion I truly believe that yes fast-food does encourage people to eat more fat,salt and sugar. You see I think fast-food it’s like some sort of drug when people eat fast-food day after day they tend to gain weight as well increased their cholesterol. If people tend to let fast-food in their lives it would become a habit that people would be so obsessed with. More likely, fast-food would increase your weight,cholesterol,high blood pressure and etc.

In our modern world, with increasingly cheap, high calorie food, prepared foods that are high in salt, sugars or fat, combined with our inactive lifestyles, increasing urbanisation and changing modes of transport has caused obesity statistics to rapidly increase in the last few decades around the world. Obesity also affects the poor due to things like marketing of unhealthy foods. Firstly, people think that using fructose corn syrup is better than using natural sugar; however, fructose makes our brain think we are hungry when we are not really hungry, so we eat more and get fat quickly. Secondly, they use “Smart choices” label on every product to sell them easily. They added vitamin A, C on it, but the important thing was that still contain a lot of sugar. Finally, people are unaware what they eat every day. They just eat what they want, what they like without understanding these products.
