The Basic purpose of policing in democratic societies are to (1) enforce the laws of the society of which the police are a part, (2) apprehend offenders who participate in crime, (3) prevent crime, (4) preserve domestic peace and tranquility, and (5) provide the community with needed enforcement-related services (Schmalleger, 2016). Collectively speaking, police agencies are the primary enforcers of federal, state, and local criminal laws (Schmalleger, 2016). In this essay, I will explain the responsibilities of each of the agencies, FBI, State Police, and The Sheriff. I will also discuss how each organization is similar and how they may differ from one another.

The duties handled within this jurisdiction includes patrolling roadways, enforcing state laws, maintaining peace and assisting municipal law enforcement when necessary (Reid, 2016). The primary goals of the state police are to enforce traffic laws on the highways and to work statewide criminal investigations. In some states, the state police will also have positions that will provide security for individual events, handle jail disruptions, and state police also ensure the safety and protection during riots. Unlike the FBI, state police may report to different agencies like the Department of Transportation, the Department of Public Safety, and the Department of Natural Resources. In some states, police will assist local officers that involve multiple jurisdictions for difficult cases where they can have complete police powers.
