Introduction This paper is going to focus on my personal reflection of my field experience in a general education kindergarten classroom. The topics that are going to be discussed are instructional planning and experiences, accommodations and modifications, literacy development, and improvements for literacy development.
Instructional Planning and Experiences
After the first day of field experience, it was readily apparent that there was a wide range of learners within the class, which made the process of selecting developmentally appropriate materials somewhat difficult. Upon consulting with the teacher to narrow down the list of books that would be the best to use for the lesson, each book then had to be evaluated using the checklist that

This makes writing lesson plans that are able to support and encourage each students’ unique ability to learn difficult because it involves a lot of time spent on research and requires one to be extremely flexible and accommodating when it comes to children with cultural, linguistic, or other special and unique needs. Within this kindergarten classroom, there were no children with such unique needs that required the daily lesson plan to be accommodated or modified in any drastic way. However, there were some children with behavioral issues. Those children were seated on either side of the teacher during morning meetings and during other activities that occurred on the carpet. They were also constantly being reminded of what they should and should not be doing during their daily activities. The alphabet was taped to the wall, there were number stuffed animals lining the window, the children’s independent reading book boxes along with the large book box were easily accessible as they were placed under the white board where the students had their morning meeting. These are only a few examples of how the classroom was designed to promote literacy.
When developing and implementing the reading experience lesson plan, it was easily determined that read-alouds are very intricate and require lots of planning and thought. The books that are chosen must be easy to follow and the students should be able to understand the themes and messages of each story upon completion of the read-aloud. The extension activities should also be able to deepen the student’s knowledge about the book. Read-alouds are meant to improve a child’s literacy, which is why implementing them in any classroom (in this case, a kindergarten classroom) is extremely important.
