The Third Plate by chef Dan Barber is a non-fiction book that examines agriculture, food, and sustainability, which he argues for a new way of thinking about America’s food system. Barber explores how our current system is unsustainable and unhealthy for American’s, and tries to find new ways to change the system by visiting several farms, restaurants, and high class chefs. Barber used a storytelling technique in his writing to convey his viewpoints and facts from a historical illustration, personal experiences, and modern day systems. In the opening part of The Third Plate, Barber tells a historic story about a farmer from Spain who created new ways to modify his wheat in a healthier and tastier way. This opening set a tone for the rest of the book by establishing his approach to exploring sustainable agriculture.
In his book Fast Food Nation, Schlosser explains and clarifies the dark side of Fast Food in America and the world. Schlosser starts off the book by telling the story of Carl Karcher, who bought a hot dog cart while working his own job and with the advances in automobile industry he eventually opened a Drive-In Barbeque restaurant. Schlosser explains how the economy after world war 2 helped get Carl a lot of customers. In addition, Schlosser also mentions the story of the McDonald brothers, opening the first Speedee Serive System restaurant and how other restaurants adopted the idea. Schlosser mentions advertising Fast Food for kids and how that increases customers coming in.

The first section is called “The American Way,” which interrogates the beginnings of the Fast Food Nation within the context of post-World War II America. The second section is called “Meat and Potatoes,” and it is about the specific mechanizations of the fast-food industry, including the chemical flavoring of the food, the production of cattle and chickens, the working conditions of beef industry, the dangers of eating meat, and the global context of fast food as an American cultural export. Schlosser argues America’s lives are solely based off of fast food. Throughout his writing he describes how common it is in our society in which fast food is ordered, sold, and consumed. Everywhere you go, every glimpse you take, every corner you pass, fast food is being sold everywhere. Schlosser describes throughout his text the commonality of fast food in restaurants, airports, schools, and large chained stores available nationwide, in which each compress the similarity of fast food. Not only does he include how common fast food is in an American’s life, but he describes how Americans will spend more of their money in their wallet on fast food than they would on other livelihood essentials.

Chicken nuggets and mac & cheese are great food choices anytime and anywhere. Some people may think that chicken nuggets and mac & cheese have not impacted the lives of Americans but, I disagree. Chicken nuggets and mac & cheese have impacted the lives of Americans because mac and cheese helped Americans through the Great Depression, chicken used to be very hard to prepare and chicken nuggets helped solve this problem, and anyone can eat the delicious foods for just a small price!
According to Woodson (1933), “The oppressor…teaches the negro that he has no worth-while past, that his race has done nothing significant since the beginning of time, and that there is no evidence that he will achieve anything great. (page #”) In other words, Woodson implies that throughout history, negroes were deceived of their past and were wrongfully taught that they contributed nothing to society except for their role as slaves; more specifically their history was subjugated. The course, Introduction to African American Studies is designed to recover the subjugated history of African Americans. It is also formed to give an overview of the culture, race, racism, family, and other specific topics such as women and voting rights in America.
If a practice or belief fits the status quo, does that mean it is justified? From the founding of the American colonies until 1865, African slavery was the backbone of America’s economy. Slaves were shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in horrendous, fatal conditions, sold as property, branded, and forced to perform grueling labor. In our modern American society, it is commonplace to tip servers and waiters after eating at a restaurant due to numerous extrinsic motivations such as societal norms, and service quality. The cultural practice of tipping fosters a legal environment that promotes poverty, as many states allow servers to be paid less than minimum wage.
For my second experiential learning assignment, I decided to break a social norm while going out to eat with my family at a restaurant: granted this is something I have a habit of doing but the reaction I got from my dining mates was particularly interesting this time. To give a little bit of background of the setting I was in at the time, I was with my mother, younger brother, and my mother’s friend at a restaurant in DC for my birthday dinner. The restaurant was crowded, but not many people were paying attention to what we were doing. Better Eating Habits of Louisiana The south is known for consisting of states that cook the most heartiest meals and extremely unhealthy meals from the way that the main course is prepared to the desserts being filled with lots of sugar. The state of Louisiana is a true southern state because it is known for its culturally driven food, especially in the city of New Orleans. For many years the concept of eating healthy has gotten more popular because it has became a major priority. Many of the causes of death are because of poor diets and not doing exercise activities properly.

Everyone can identify themselves with a concrete culture and in every group there are numerous food dishes that satisfies one, or brings back peerless memories and feelings only they can relate to. Food itself has meaning attached to it, from the way it is prepared down to the ingredients used. Factors that influence food can be anything from practices and beliefs to the economy and distribution. Culinary traditions are important in helping express cultural identity.
