One strategy that reinforces learning through collaboration is team teaching. In the classroom both teachers are positioned at the front of the classroom with different responsibilities. For example, one teacher may write notes, while the other delivers large group instruction. Through team teaching, both educators can bounce ideas off one another or show students two different methods of solving a problem. This strategy is most effective in a coteaching partnership emphasizing give and take.
One of the biggest concerning the need for an increase in rigor in instruction in American schools. She discusses that in Poland students must stay in academic classes for an extra year and teachers are paid bonuses to engage in professional development work. She also notes that in Finland they “rebooted their teacher-training colleges, forcing them to become much more selective and rigorous.” In an article written by Sarah Tantillio on Only Good Books, she recognizes the validity of these statements, but comments that in America “the Common Core States Standards, which most states have adopted, they are definitely rigorous, But how they are implemented (and assessed) from state to state and school to school is still a Very Big Question.” Further in her article she points out the large population differences between Finland, Poland, and the United States, and how this affects our education system.
In the article, “Quarrel over Common Core: A Pennsylvania Primer” by Randy Kraft (2014), Common Core and the controversy surrounding it are discussed heavily. Kraft’s thesis is to inform the audience about Common Core and explain, impartially, the arguments for and against it. In 2010, Pennsylvania took on the Common Core Standards. These standards were put in place to ensure that students of Pennsylvania were on the same academic level by graduation, and enable them to be better equipped to compete in a global marketplace (p. 1).
All around the world, desperate acts are performed to create a perfect dystopia. John Brown tried to fight for what aligned with is morals. He fought for the dystopia where all men are equal. However, his motives and his actions lead people to question him. Through the questioning, there are also quite a few perspectives.
Since the passage of No Child Left Behind Act 12 years ago, teachers are judged based on standardized tests and their students’ scores. The tests are often used as a measure for schools to determine if teachers should keep their jobs. The whole teaching profession is being shamed as inadequate. Joe Nocera, opinion columnist for the New York Times newspaper, by examining a thinker named Marc Tucker, argues for a new way to approach educational reform. To begin with, Nocera addresses reforming and reconstructing our current schools.
This artifact was developed through the analysis of five case study scenarios to qualify the Principles of Professional Conduct of the Education Profession of Florida and the Code of Ethics that were infringed by educators. This artifact helps me to identify what penalties can be imposed by the Educational Practices Commission against a certificate holder as well as the impact that educator’s ethical violation will likely have or had on the learner’s emotional, social, and cognitive well-being, the learning environment, and the school safety. Supporting and collaborating with teachers showed me how good teaching takes place in the classroom but does not begin or end there. Providing clear and credible timetables for activities within a lesson, and remaining aware of the progress of individual students, allows maximising the use of available teaching time. The professional role of a teacher is demanding and reliant on both thoughtful planning and an ability to adapt. Classroom teaching involves overseeing the learning of relatively large groups and demands lessons that are both accessible and challenging. Activities may, for instance, pair students with differing subject knowledge to enable peer mentoring while also boosting confidence in the subject.
It was discovered that in education there were certain areas that were universal and common among learning. The two main subjects of concern were English language arts and mathematics. Common core is the new curriculum implemented now in school systems to develop learning. Common Core Standards are a clear set of shared goals and expectations for the knowledge and skills students need in English language arts and mathematics at each grade level so they can be prepared to succeed in college, career, and life. Although, Common Core seems to be here to stay this article addresses concerns in reference to content, instruction, and assessment.
In recent months, however, there has been a controversy swirling around the use of Common Core materials in conjunction with teaching to TEKS standards. Teachers in Texas have been provided materials aligned with Common Core standards to combined with TEKS teaching materials to students in districts around the state (Hope, 2015). This not only illustrates the evolution of Texas educational policy with regard to how stringent it has been about maintaining its own standards, but also it shows the reach of Common Core to date. Even in a state that is not necessarily subscribing to all of the Common Core principles – which has had its own controversy since its broad initiation into school systems around the country – there has still been something of an infiltration of Common Core. Our current period in education is full of great change and opportunity. Students, teachers, and principals are being challenged to think, learn, and apply in different ways. The Common Core State Standards and technology are the main reasons this time period is so important. These two things are creating, "great opportunities within themselves" (Fullan, p.12, 2014) and at the same time are very challenging because they have "unclear implications for implementation" (Fullan, p.12, 2014). Both Common Core State Standards and technology are very complex and create an exciting time in learning across the educational system however, make it challenging for educators in the U.S. to be effective and implement in a way that maximizes learning.
The Common Core state standard used through this learning segment is 8.EE.A.4: Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). The district, like most schools, is focused on standardized tests as they are the key to receiving sources of funding. Part of a teacher-focused essentialist view on education is a strong emphasis on a core curriculum centering around science, math, reading, and writing. Essentialism focuses on, “accuracy and thoroughness from each student” teachers are expected to push “for an overall higher standard for all students” in the core curriculum (Figures, 2012, n.p.). This philosophy is great, however, because the district is pushing it at the teachers through rigorous testing for their students and copious amounts of paperwork for teacher accountability there seems to be a disconnect between pushing all students to strive and creating a learning environment that fosters
Teachers working conditions shows the essential part in a schools’ capacity to draw in, retain and encourage good teachers. Goldhaber, Gross, & Player, (2007) cited that working environment and employment fulfilment are thought to be interconnected in the school. It is further reported that teachers who leave tend to do so because of job dissatisfaction and the poor working conditions. Undisciplined students, burdensome paperwork, unprofessional administrators, and uncooperative parents’ prompt teacher turnover also.
