When I raised my hand, and took my oath of service I had no idea of the journey Leadership Philosophy that laid ahead of me. Joining late in life was one transition, but the transition into the Non-Commission Officer (NCO) Corps, and a leader has been a very rewarding experience. The values that were instilled in me as a child and those that have been drilled into my make-up as an NCO are very similar. Leadership is the action of leading a group or organization. To be an effective leader one must be honest, trustworthy, and contain a large amount of integrity. The traits and qualities of an effective leader were taught to me during my time in JROTC. JROTC stresses its core values of honor, courage, and commitment to all of its members. Cadet's are expected to uphold these three values in every aspect of what you do as a cadet in this program.
“Leadership is the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish the mission and improve the organization” defined in ADP 6-22. I chose Servant Leadership for my discussion topic as it was my chosen style of leadership during my military career and the one I extend into my civilian career. I feel it is important to be a servant to your followers (staff) as they are the ones who truly carry out the tasks which accomplish the goals of your organization. Without truly understanding where your staff is mentally, sharing work and hardship with them and allowing them to see you have their best interests at heart; you will not have engaged followers (Farmer, 2010). To be an effective leader in today’s workplace, it is important to accomplish your organization’s goals on time and on budget. To do these things require effective communication through a servant leader’s actions
The movie “The Blind Side” is about a boy that were on the bottom with nothing and lived in the worst part of the city, but the family Tuohy wanted to change this. Firstly, Michael Oher had no family when the family Tuohy found him except for a mother that was doing drugs and a brother he had never spoke as he can remember, they realised that he had no place to stay so they took him home to their own house. Leigh Ann tried to find out who his mother was, but that was impossible. So instead she wanted to integrate Michael in their family by doing shopping and take him with them on other activities.
Every successful United States Military Academy cadet must know how to be a leader. And in order to be a leader, one must believe in himself and in the people around him. One must believe that he has everything it takes to fight the good fight of faith—he must have values. A leader must possess the commitment needed to move forward with ideas; the relentless determination to seek the truth, to achieve new heights, and to ultimately open the eyes of the uninformed. A leader must possess teamwork skills and utilize them to the best of his ability; essentially working and cooperating with others and potentially getting them on their feet working toward the completion of goals, past all impediments, overcoming all obstacles.
1. My philosophy of leadership is about collaboration and teamwork. Respecting and treating everyone the same, is key to supporting a good team atmosphere. I believe when a leader puts effort and care into assisting others, then their peers and followers will naturally want to support them. It is also important for a leader to recognize, that advocacy must never become so important that the critical elements of leadership are neglected (e.g. policy enforcement, command support, etc...).

Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
