Humanity isn’t defined as the act of being a physical human being, but it is the qualities, such as compassion and empathy, that make someone human. As the award-winning author, Arlene J. Chai said, “Desperate people lose the things that make them human beings. They lost their heart. Anger and hate fill them so they act like animals.” Losing these concepts changes every aspect of their lives. Unquestionably, when the creature begins to kill the most important people in Victor’s life due to the rage he feels towards Victor for abandoning him, his sole purpose in life becomes retribution against Frankenstein, which changes his perception of right and wrong. After Victor’s death, the monster visits him and laments how his actions drove Victor to his death. When he tries to explain to Robert Walton, a man who took Victor in to care for him when he was in poor health, the reasons that caused him to commit these horrific deeds, he says, “Evil, thenceforth became my good. Urged thus far, I had no choice but to adapt my nature to an element I had willingly chosen. And now it is ended; there is my last victim”(Grimly 191). Early on after his creation, the creature believed his purpose was to become accepted by the human society he admired and live peacefully among them. However, after his rejection from society, which intensified his belief that Victor was the root cause of all of his tribulations, he begins to exact revenge against him, thinking that it is justifiable and morally right.
