Romeo and Juliet: A Game of Love and Death “Young men’s love then lies / Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.” (2.3.67-68). In William Shakespeare’s well-known tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, two teenagers from rival families fall in love at first sight. Although Juliet’s father promises her to another man, Romeo and Juliet plan to run away together. However, when their scheme meets with disaster, they cannot accept life without each other and they commit suicide. Miscommunication and confusing advice from the Nurse and Friar Lawrence, Juliet’s cousin, Tybalt, being an instigator who is constantly causing trouble, and adolescent passion all contribute to the fatal conclusion of the two star-crossed lovers. The story goes, every since Romeo and Mercutio snuck into the party, Tybalt had been wanting to start something with Romeo. Now that Romeo is married to Juliet, he wants to make peace and does not want to get into anything with his new “family”. But Tybalt doesn’t know any of that. So one fateful day, Tybalt does go up to Romeo and starts arguing with him. But Romeo will not argue back. Mercutio is upset with this and decides to defend his friend just with some harmless and playful banter, by turning Tybalt’s insults towards Romeo, around and against him. But Tybalt will not give up with Romeo. Next thing you know Mercutio is physically in the middle of both of them trying to stop the situation and ends up with Tybalt’s sword in him. Tybalt walks away and Romeo is left to watch his friend die. By now, Romeo is all worked up and angrily crying. He felt that he shouldn’t have let the fact that he is married to Juliet; soften him up because now his friend is dead. So Tybalt comes back and now Romeo wants to fight. One thing leads to another and Romeo’s sword is through Tybalt’s body. So now both Mercutio and Tybalt are both dead. Romeo is upset because not only is his friend dead, but he knows he is going to get into trouble with the Prince for how this fight ended and he runs off.
