Genetically Modified Foods Persuasive Essay

1004 Words5 Pages

Genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) are living organisms whose genetic material has been synthetically mutated in order to add genes and hormones to deliver a desired trait. These genetically engineered foods (GM foods) and organisms have been around since the 1990’s. Many of the foods we eat include genetically transformed ingredients. The topic of GM foods and GMO’s very controversial. A large percent of people disagree on the production of these altered foods. Some claim that they are dangerous and unhealthy while others praise that this will grant global food security and will help possibly solve chronic hunger. Several recent studies conducted have proven that maybe these new superfoods aren't what we believe they are, and that all …show more content…

As we all know humans and animals share very similar cells. Our cells react very similar to chemicals and nourishments put in our bodies. Rats who are also mammals like us homo sapiens were fed a GM diet to test the side effects of GMO’s. Dr Séralini ( the head scientist of the experiment) declared that after two years of being fed the diet, the rats developed extensive medical issues. The GM diet had caused the tiny rodents to develop abnormally large kidneys, severe liver and kidney damage and also cancerous tumors. If these happened to rats, imagine how this could affect our bodies and cells. The rats’ symptoms appeared quickly because they have smaller bodies and organs than us humans. The experiment is proof enough that GM foods should be banned and that more research needs to go into the GMO …show more content…

They believe that GM foods will grant global security and could eradicate hunger. Those people aren't wrong. There are benefits to the production of GM foods but the ‘cons’ extremely outweigh the ‘pros’. For instance, GMO supporters agree with the idea of GM foods because these transformed foods could be packed with lots of vitamins and nutrients. An example is the Golden Rice which is altered rice that scientists added vitamin A to it, to boost its nutritional value. Yes this rice could possibly aid us in maintaining healthy levels of vitamin A but a number of harsh chemicals and toxins used to make the rice definitely outweighs the fact that it contains high levels of vitamin A. Also it has been proven that the engineered foods usually have a lower nutritional value than conventional and organically grown nourishments. GMOs are still not worth
